Extract from General Officer Commanding's letter No.13095

dated 29th June, 1918, to the Secretary, War Office,

London, S..

Mr. Swinnerton filled in the necessary forms but owing to the

distance from Singapore several days journey

ho was unable to come

in to see me. If he had done so he would have been provided with

second class passage to the United Kingdom, the standard value of which is £46 (the price having been recently raised from £36), under authority which has been granted me to send Home candidates with previous military service, who are suitable for entry in on Officers Cadet Unit, (War Office Cable No. 26008.S.D. 3(b) dated the 17th

March, 1917).

I have ascertained that Mr. Swinnerton is fitted in every way for entry in an Officer Cadet Unit, and I have given him a recommendu -tion to this effect. I have instructed Mr. Swinnerton to apply to the War Office for assistance toward the payment of his pasange as soon

$8 he has been accepted for Cadet Unit, quoting the number of thi letter. I may mention that Ur. Swinnerton made no condition when notifying me that he was proceeding home. It was only when I found that he proposed to bear the whole cost of his journay, together with that ɗ his wife and child, from very scanty means, by putting the whole of his savings to this use, that I decided that this case WAJ one for sympathetic treatment.
